Médecin allemand né à Braunsberg le 15 avril 1844, mort à Berlin le 25 mai 1898. Formé à Königsberg, docteur en médecine de Berlin en 1867, il devient médecin praticien à Memel en 1869 après des postes d'assistant à Schöneberg et à Danzig, sert comme médecin militaire pendant la guerre franco-prussienne et revient à Memel en 1871, où il fonde un petit hôpital et se fait connaître pour avoir découvert le premier des cas de lèpre en Prusse-Orientale. En 1884, il s'installe à Berlin, où il devient un « médecin du peuple » au sens le plus noble du terme.
