Physiologiste italien né le 26 mai 1841 à Casale Monferrato, dans le Piémont, mort le 6 septembre 1898 à Turin. Docteur en médecine de l'université de Turin (1862), il se forme ensuite à Paris auprès de Hiffelsheim avant de revenir assister Moleschott à Turin. Nommé professeur de physiologie à l'université de Palerme en 1881 puis de matière médicale et de pharmacologie à Pise en 1888, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa mort, il devient après la disparition de Moleschott en 1893 le rédacteur des « Untersuchungen zur Naturlehre des Menschen und der Thiere », puis en 1897 du « Trattato di Farmacoterapia ».
