Écrivain et poète russe né en 1860 dans la colonie agricole juive de Bobrovy-Kout, gouvernement de Kherson. Son premier poème paraît en 1880 dans le « Razsvyet » ; installé à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1881, il publie dans plusieurs périodiques russes et fait paraître son premier recueil, « Stikhotvoreniya », en 1885, suivi de « Dumy i Poesii » en 1887. Ses poèmes yiddish sont réunis en 1886 sous le titre « Lieder und Gedanken », et un recueil en trois volumes de ses poèmes paraît à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1897, traduit en hébreu à Varsovie en 1898 ; il réside (1903) à Saint-Pétersbourg, où il collabore à l'hebdomadaire « Budushchnost ».
