Compositeur germano-juif, célèbre pour la partition du film Der blaue Engel (L'Ange bleu, 1930), dont la chanson « Falling in Love Again (Can't Help It) » chantée par Marlene Dietrich. Fils du compositeur d'opérette Victor Hollaender (1866–1940) ; ses oncles étaient Gustav Hollaender (1855–1915), directeur du Stern'sches Konservatorium de Berlin, et Felix Hollaender (1867–1931), romancier et critique dramatique. Fuyant l'Allemagne nazie en 1933 en raison de son ascendance juive, il fit carrière à Hollywood (4 nominations aux Oscars).
