German-Jewish composer, famous for the score of the film Der blaue Engel (The Blue Angel, 1930), whose song "Falling in Love Again (Can't Help It)" sung by Marlene Dietrich. Son of operetta composer Victor Hollaender (1866–1940); his uncles were Gustav Hollaender (1855–1915), director of the Stern'sches Konservatorium in Berlin, and Felix Hollaender (1867–1931), novelist and dramatic critic. Fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933 because of his Jewish descent, he had a career in Hollywood (4 Oscar nominations).
