Philanthrope allemand né à Berlin au milieu du XIXe siècle, apparenté à la famille de Moïse Mendelssohn. Bouleversé par les persécutions subies par les juifs russes en 1882-90, il se rend en 1890 au pays de Madian et décide d'y fonder une colonie ; vingt-quatre émigrants quittent Le Caire à la mi-novembre 1891 sous sa conduite, mais l'entreprise, minée par des dissensions internes, est abandonnée après deux mois. Il relate cette tentative dans « Das Land Madian », publié à Berlin en 1891.
