Philologue allemand né à Königsberg le 16 juillet 1824, formé aux universités de Königsberg et de Leipzig de 1841 à 1845. Privat-docent de philologie classique à Königsberg en 1847, professeur adjoint en 1856 puis titulaire en 1858, il se retire en 1892 à Strasbourg comme professeur honoraire. Son œuvre majeure sur les mœurs romaines sous l'Empire (3 vol., 1862-71) est traduite en français par Ch. Vogel (1865-74) ; il édite en outre Martial (1886) et Juvénal (1895).
