Médecin allemand né le 20 avril 1790 à Königsberg, mort en 1851 à Halle. Docteur en médecine de l'université de Königsberg (1812), il participe à la campagne de 1813 jusqu'à Paris comme médecin-chef d'un hôpital de camp, avant de séjourner à Carlsruhe puis Vienne et de voyager en Italie en 1815 avec le peintre Philipp Veit. Rentré en Allemagne en 1817, il devient privat-docent à Halle, puis professeur adjoint en 1819 et professeur titulaire de médecine théorique en 1823, chaire qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa mort.
