Numismate allemand né à Berlin le 25 juin 1813, mort dans cette ville le 4 avril 1884. Formé aux universités de Bonn et de Berlin, il voyage en Italie en 1838-39 avant d'obtenir en 1840 un poste au cabinet royal des monnaies antiques de Berlin, dont il devient directeur de la section numismatique du musée en 1868 ; il est élu membre de l'Académie des sciences de Berlin en 1872. Auteur de nombreux ouvrages de numismatique, il publie notamment « Das Königliche Münzkabinet » en 1877.
