Peintre de genre né le 10 janvier 1825 à Kohljanowitz, en Bohême. Formé à l'Académie de Vienne puis auprès du professeur Waldmüller, il voyage en Italie en 1850 et à Düsseldorf en 1852 avant de se consacrer, à partir de 1854, à la peinture de genre puisée dans la vie militaire et la vie viennoise, ainsi qu'à des scènes de la vie populaire souabe. Membre de l'Académie de Vienne depuis 1866, il reçoit l'ordre de François-Joseph en 1865 et est anobli sous le nom de « Von Mahlheim ».
