Philosophe allemand né le 20 juin 1839 à Bodenfelde, dans la province prussienne de Hanovre. Formé aux universités de Breslau et de Göttingen ainsi qu'au séminaire rabbinique de Breslau, il enseigne la philosophie à l'université de Breslau à partir de 1875, devenant professeur en 1888. Envoyé par l'Académie des sciences de Prusse étudier la philosophie anglaise en Angleterre puis, en 1898, la vie de Spinoza aux Pays-Bas, il publie notamment « Die Lebensgeschichte Spinoza's » à Leipzig en 1899.
