Born into a Jewish family in Czernowitz (now in Ukraine), trained in Vienna, he emigrated to the United States in 1926. Theorist of the 'Endless House', scenographer (director of sets at Juilliard School 1933–1957), he designed the Shrine of the Book in Jerusalem, which houses the Dead Sea Scrolls (1959–1965).
