Alfred « Fred » Zinnemann was born in Rzeszów in 1907, son of Jewish parents, Oskar and Anna (née Feiwel) Zinnemann. Major Austrian-American filmmaker, he directed High Noon (1952), From Here to Eternity (1953), A Man for All Seasons (1966), and Julia (1977), and won four Academy Awards. At age 85, he published his autobiography A Life in the Movies (1992).
