Franklin, Jacob Abraham

Journaliste et philanthrope anglais; né à Portsmouth en 1809; mort le 3 août 1877. À son retrait des affaires, il se rendit à Londres et prit une part active aux affaires communautaires. Il fonda un périodique hebdomadaire, « The Voice of Jacob » — le premier organe de la communauté anglo-juive — pour exprimer ses vues contre le mouvement réformiste de 1842. Franklin représenta la communauté de Manchester à la Chambre des députés; fut président d'un comité de la Chambre juive des pupilles; fut l'un des fondateurs de l'Anglo-Jewish Association, et membre de son comité exécutif. Animé d'un zèle pour l'éducation juive, il était désireux d'établir une école juive en tant que board-school à Londres, et réussit à obtenir la participation des écoles juives aux allocations parlementaires. Il était fellow de la Society of Arts, et lut un nombre de mémoires sur le système monétaire décimal, l'éducation, etc., ayant été examiné sur ce dernier sujet devant une commission parlementaire. À sa mort, il légua l'essentiel de sa fortune pour l'exécution de certains projets éducatifs, dont la publication de livres de texte juifs. Sous les auspices du Franklin Fund parurent des ouvrages tels que « Natural Religion » de N. S. Joseph, « Outlines of Jewish History » de Lady Magnus, et « The Jewish Religion » de Friedländer.
