Mathématicien, rédacteur et essayiste américain, né à Eger, en Hongrie, le 18 janvier 1853. Diplômé de la Columbian University de Washington en 1869, il travaille dans l'ingénierie civile avant de devenir en 1877 fellow de la Johns Hopkins University, où il obtient son doctorat en 1880 et enseigne les mathématiques jusqu'en 1895. Il dirige ensuite la rédaction du « Baltimore News » et collabore à plusieurs revues scientifiques et littéraires.
