Rabbin allemand, né à Ungarisch-Brod, en Moravie, en janvier 1848, mort à Johannisbad le 22 août 1887. Formé à la yeshiva de Presbourg puis au séminaire de Breslau, où il obtient son doctorat en 1870, il devient en 1875 secrétaire de la Wiener Israelitische Allianz puis, en 1877, succède à Abraham Geiger au rabbinat de Berlin, où il collabore avec Grätz à la « Monatsschrift ». Il est l'auteur d'études sur la Septante et le Peschitta, de travaux karaïtes et de recueils de piyyoutim et de sermons.
