Physicien allemand né à Brunswick le 29 juin 1801, mort à Dresde le 14 janvier 1869, formé aux gymnases de Wolfenbüttel et de Brunswick puis à l'université de Berlin, où il obtient son doctorat en 1823. Privat-docent à Berlin (1826-27), il devient professeur adjoint de physique, de géographie et de mathématiques à l'université de Breslau (1827-50) puis professeur titulaire en 1850, et publie plusieurs ouvrages entre 1823 et 1869, dont « Die Lehre von der Cohäsion » (1835) et « Krystallisation und Amorphie » (1852).
