Député allemand né à Obbach, en Bavière, le 8 juin 1827, mort à Nuremberg le 18 juillet 1889. Engagé dans l'agitation politique de 1848 à Würzburg, il exerce le droit à Nuremberg à partir de 1861, est élu à la Diète bavaroise en 1869, qu'il ne quittera plus, et siège au Reichstag allemand (1874-78) ; partisan résolu de l'unité allemande après la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870-71, il devient un chef de file libéral et milite pour les droits de ses coreligionnaires, obtenant en 1880 l'abrogation de taxes imposées aux Juifs dans plusieurs régions de Bavière.
