Frankel, Zecharias

Théologien allemand né à Prague le 30 septembre 1801, mort à Breslau le 13 février 1875, fondateur de l'école du judaïsme historique, qui allie liberté de recherche et autorité de la tradition. Formé au Talmud à la yechiva de Bezalel Ronsperg, il part en 1825 pour Budapest, où il obtient son diplôme universitaire en 1831, devient rabbin de district à Leitmeritz puis grand rabbin de Dresde en 1836, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'en 1854, année où il prend la direction du séminaire de Breslau, qu'il dirige jusqu'à sa mort. En 1843, il déclina une invitation au grand rabbinat de Berlin, vacant depuis 1800.
