Médecin et chimiste autrichien né à Cracovie le 22 mai 1868, formé au gymnase de Graz puis en médecine à Prague, Fribourg-en-Brisgau et Vienne, où il obtient son diplôme en 1892. Après avoir travaillé aux stations zoologiques de Trieste, Strasbourg et Cambridge, il enseigne la chimie physiologique et la pharmacologie à l'université de Vienne, et publie notamment un ouvrage à Wiesbaden en 1896 et un autre, « Arzneimittelsynthese », à Berlin en 1901.
