Banquier et philanthrope allemand, fils de Joel Wolf et petit-fils de David Fränkel, auteur du « Ḳorban 'Edah », né à Breslau à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, mort dans la même ville le 27 janvier 1846. Parti de rien, il devient l'un des principaux banquiers de Breslau et reçoit du gouvernement prussien le titre de « Kommerzienrath » ; infatigable dans l'action communautaire, il fait construire à ses frais un hôpital avec orphelinat, bet ha-midrash et synagogue, et lègue, n'ayant pas d'enfants, l'essentiel de sa fortune à des œuvres charitables, notamment à un séminaire juif qui porte son nom, inauguré à Breslau en 1854.
