Médecin allemand né à Breslau le 5 mai 1844, formé en médecine à Berlin, Vienne et Breslau, docteur en médecine en 1866. Il participe à la guerre austro-prussienne de 1866 puis, comme chirurgien assistant, à la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870-71, avant de s'installer comme médecin, accoucheur et gynécologue dans sa ville natale en 1872. Privat-docent à l'université de Breslau en 1873 puis professeur honoraire en 1893, il s'implique dans la politique municipale et est élu conseiller municipal de Breslau en 1903.
