Médecin autrichien né à Vienne le 9 novembre 1857, docteur en médecine en 1880, entré au corps sanitaire de l'armée autrichienne. Chirurgien des chevaliers Teutoniques, il prend part à la guerre serbo-bulgare de 1885-86, quitte l'armée en 1890 pour devenir chargé de cours en chirurgie à l'université de Vienne, puis chirurgien en chef du Karolinen Kinderspital de Vienne à partir de 1893 et rédacteur en chef de la « Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift » en 1896.
