Pathologiste italien né à Sabbionetta le 26 janvier 1848, formé au lycée de Milan puis en médecine à Pavie, avec des cours supérieurs à Turin et à Heidelberg. Élève de Rizzozero en anatomie pathologique, il devient successivement privat-docent en 1876, professeur adjoint en 1878 puis professeur à Modène en 1881, et professeur d'anatomie pathologique et de bactériologie à Turin en 1884 ; volontaire en 1868 dans la campagne de Garibaldi dans le Tyrol méridional, il est élu membre de l'Accademia di Medicina en 1886, des Lincei de Rome en 1892, et président de l'Università Popolare de Turin en 1900.
