Médecin et pathologiste américain né à Louisville, dans le Kentucky, le 25 mars 1863, docteur en médecine de l'université de Louisville, formé ensuite à Johns Hopkins, à Strasbourg et à Prague. Ancien professeur adjoint de pathologie à Johns Hopkins et professeur de pathologie à l'université de Pennsylvanie depuis 1903, il vient d'être nommé à la tête du Rockefeller Institute of Preventive Medicine de New York ; il a siégé en 1900 à la commission médicale de Johns Hopkins envoyée aux Philippines, puis en 1901 à la Commission nationale de la peste.
