Poète né à Évora, au Portugal, le 4 avril 1517, mort à Raguse, en Sicile, en 1607, membre de la famille espagnole des Adumim, dont une partie s'établit en Italie sous le nom de « De Rossi ». Ses parents, convertis en apparence, lui inculquent l'amour du judaïsme et l'engagent, à peine âgé de dix-sept ans, à quitter son pays ; il gagne en 1536 la Flandre puis la Suisse, avant de s'établir à Ancône en 1552, où il devient l'un des plus grands poètes latins de son temps.
