Archéologue karaïte russe né à Loutsk, en Volhynie, le 27 septembre 1786, mort à Chufut-Kale, en Crimée, le 7 juin 1874. Hazzan de sa ville natale dès 1818, il entreprend à partir de 1830 de nombreux voyages — Jérusalem, Constantinople, le Caucase, l'Égypte — pour collecter manuscrits et inscriptions karaïtes, et commence en 1839 des fouilles dans l'ancien cimetière de Chufut-Kale. Sa collection, acquise en 1859 par la Bibliothèque impériale de Saint-Pétersbourg sur la recommandation du professeur Chwolson, fut jugée par certains savants en partie ou entièrement constituée de faux destinés à glorifier les Karaïtes.
