Italian musicologist and composer of Jewish origin, trained at the Liceo musicale « Padre Martini » in Bologna. Specialist in medieval music, he gave in 1935 the first modern edition of the Laudario di Cortona in « La lauda e i primordi della melodia italiana » (two volumes, historical apparatus, facsimiles and transcriptions). Professor at the universities of Florence and then Rome, he was sidelined by the racial laws of 1938, stayed in Brussels and New York, and died in Florence in 1940. He was brother-in-law of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
