Économiste politique et dramaturge né à Lisbonne de parents marranes. Après des études à l'université de Madrid et une carrière militaire où il devient capitaine, il s'installe à Paris comme consul général du Portugal, avant de revenir vers 1650 à Lisbonne, où l'Inquisition le fait garrotter le 1er décembre 1652. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages publiés à Madrid et à Paris entre 1637 et 1643 ; son fils José da Villa-Real fut professeur de grec à Marseille en 1682.
