Born in Buenos Aires into a Jewish family (father Hermann Weil, wealthy grain merchant; mother Rosa, also Jewish). Doctor of political science (dissertation on socialization), he financed in 1923, thanks to a grant from his father, the foundation of the Institut für Sozialforschung in Frankfurt — cradle of the Frankfurt School — and collaborated with Friedrich Pollock.
