Érudit russe né à Damachev, près de Brest-Litovsk, le 6 décembre 1821, mort dans la même ville le 20 janvier 1903. Après de longues années d'étude talmudique, il travaille comme contremaître chez un négociant de Brest, où le contact avec des marchands chrétiens lui donne accès aux langues et aux sciences profanes ; il fonde ensuite sa propre affaire et devient, pendant de nombreuses années, le parnas de la communauté juive. Il publie notamment l'« 'Ir Tehillah » (1886), une histoire de la communauté juive de Brest-Litovsk écrite avec Abraham Marcus Finkelstein.
