Anglo-Jewish novelist born in London in 1833 and died in the same city on July 23, 1903, educated in private schools. He emigrated to New Zealand, where he became director and part-owner of the colony's first daily newspaper, before turning to fiction: his first novel, "Grif" (1870), attracted the attention of Dickens. Several of his works, including "Solomon Isaacs" (1877), treat Jewish subjects and characters with sympathy.

Romancier anglo-juif ; né à Londres en 1833 ; mort là le 23 juillet 1903 ; éducation dans des écoles privées. Il émigra en Nouvelle-Zélande, où il se lança dans une carrière littéraire et devint directeur et propriétaire partiel du premier journal quotidien de cette colonie. Se tournant vers la fiction, il publia son premier livre, « Grif », en 1870, qui attira l'attention de Dickens. Parmi ses écrits figurent « Joshua Marvel » (1871), « London's Heart », « Great Porter Square » (1884), « Set in a Silver Sea », « The Sacred Nugget », « The King of Noland », « Something Occurred », « A Secret Inheritance », « The House of White Shadows », « The Betrayal of John Fordham », « Samuel Boyd of Catchpole Square » et « The Mesmerists ». « Solomon Isaacs » (1877), « Aaron the Jew », « Miriam Rozella » et « Pride of Race » traitent de manière sympathique des scènes et des caractères juifs.
