Born in Calcutta to a Baghdadi family tracing back to 17th-century Baghdad. Trained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York, he returned in 1952 as the first Western-trained rabbi of the Calcutta community. In 1964 he settled in Philadelphia where he served for fifteen years at the historic Mikveh Israel synagogue. He devoted a landmark historical work to his community of origin.
