Né à Calcutta dans une famille baghdadi remontant au Bagdad du XVIIᵉ s. Formé au Jewish Theological Seminary de New York, il revint en 1952 comme premier rabbin de formation occidentale de la communauté de Calcutta. En 1964 il s'installa à Philadelphie où il servit quinze ans à la synagogue historique Mikveh Israel. Il consacra à sa communauté d'origine un ouvrage historique de référence.
