Jacob Ezekiel naquit à Philadelphie le 28 juin 1812 et mourut le 16 mai 1899. Établi à Richmond, en Virginie, il obtint en 1845 l'abrogation d'une ordonnance pénalisant lourdement la violation des lois du dimanche, puis fit adopter en 1849 un amendement plaçant les observateurs du sabbat juif sur un pied d'égalité avec ceux qui chôment le premier jour. Installé à Cincinnati en 1869, il devint en 1876 secrétaire du conseil du Hebrew Union College, fonction qu'il occupa jusqu'en 1896.
