Born Makhlouf Évariste Lévi in a North African Jewish family from Constantine, he became one of the founders of French Islamic studies and the first director of the Institute of Islamic Studies in Algiers. A specialist in al-Andalus, he refounded the historiography of medieval Muslim Spain. Professor in Algiers, excluded by the Vichy statutes on Jews (1940), reinstated after 1942, he ended his career in Paris.
