Né à Paris, petit-fils par sa mère du hazzan parisien Lovy, il fut professeur de rhétorique puis inspecteur général de l'Instruction publique et enseigna vingt ans la littérature gréco-latine au Séminaire israélite de Paris. Il fut l'un des six fondateurs de l'Alliance israélite universelle et resta attaché à la foi de ses pères. Sa poésie, d'inspiration romantique, chante la famille, l'amour et les humbles.
