Born in Berlin on July 6, 1888 in a non-practicing Jewish family (his father was a banker at the Berlin Stock Exchange), converted to Christianity in his adolescence. In 1916 he exchanged correspondence with philosopher Franz Rosenzweig on Judaism and Christianity, which became a classic of interreligious dialogue ("Judaism Despite Christianity"). Emigrated to the United States, he taught at Harvard and then at Dartmouth College.
