Jacob Ettlinger fut un rabbin et auteur allemand, l'un des chefs de file de l'orthodoxie moderne, né à Carlsruhe le 17 mars 1798 et mort à Altona le 7 décembre 1871. Nommé « Kreisrabbiner » de Ladenburg en 1826 puis grand-rabbin d'Altona à partir de 1836, il devint l'un des plus farouches opposants au mouvement réformateur et mena en 1844 la protestation de cent soixante-treize rabbins contre la Conférence de Brunswick. L'année suivante, il fonda le premier organe de l'orthodoxie, « Der Zionswächter », et forma notamment Samson Raphael Hirsch et Israel Hildesheimer.
