Elia Esra fut un philanthrope, né à Calcutta le 20 février 1830, fils de David Joseph Esra, et mort en mars 1886. L'un des marchands les plus riches de l'Inde, surnommé « le Rothschild indien », il distribuait, dit-on, dix mille francs par mois aux pauvres et fit construire à Calcutta une grande synagogue, « Magen Dawid », en mémoire de son père. Son testament prévoyait la construction à Jérusalem d'une importante école talmudique.
