Priest and scribe, he led the second return from exile and restored the study of the Torah in Jerusalem. The Talmudic tradition (Sanhedrin 21b) holds that "had the Torah not been given through Moses, it could have been given through Ezra." He founded the Great Assembly (Knesset ha-Gedolah).
