Joseph ben Saül Escapa fut rabbin de Smyrne dans la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, après avoir dirigé la yeshiva de Salonique. Il resta seul rabbin de Smyrne après la mort de son collègue Joshua Ashkenazi Azariah, et demeura surtout connu pour avoir été le maître de Shabbethaï Tsevi, qu'il finit par excommunier. Il est l'auteur du « Rosh Yosef », commentaire sur les quatre Tourim de Jacob b. Asher, publié en partie à Smyrne en 1658 et 1659.
