Born in London in a Jewish family from Odessa, trained at St Bartholomew's, he participated as a military physician in the D-Day landings then became a psychoanalyst (qualified in 1954, training analysis with Hanna Segal). President of the British Psychoanalytical Society and vice-president of the IPA, major figure of the post-Kleinian tradition. Married to psychoanalyst Irma Brenman Pick.
