Born Gaston Ghrenassia (Ghenassia) in Constantine into a Sephardic Jewish family from Algeria of malouf musicians; his father Sylvain Ghrenassia (1914–2004) was a violinist. Forced to leave Algeria in 1961, he settles in France and becomes one of France's most popular singers, openly claiming his Judaism and his attachment to Israel.
