Écrivain autrichien né à Vienne, mort à Turin le 30 novembre 1902. Diplômé de l'université de Vienne, ami intime du poète Friedrich Hebbel, il dirigea en 1847 à Vienne la revue mensuelle « Der Salon », interrompue après trois numéros par la censure autrichienne. Militant de la cause populaire en 1848, il figura parmi les otages exigés par Windischgrätz lors de la reddition de Vienne, échappa aux autorités et gagna Francfort puis Paris, où il publia une « Correspondance » lithographiée avant d'être emprisonné puis expulsé ; réfugié à Londres, il devint correspondant de plusieurs journaux continentaux et rédacteur du « Londoner Deutsche Zeitung ».
