Issu d'une famille juive parisienne de la haute bourgeoisie (apparentée à Bergson et Proust), il fut un intellectuel pacifiste. Auteur de pamphlets comme « Mort de la pensée bourgeoise » (1929), il dirigea l'hebdomadaire Marianne, rédigea des discours de Pétain en 1940, puis se cacha sous l'Occupation.
