Born in Tivoli into an Italian Jewish family, Segrè discovers the elements technetium and astatine then the antiproton, a discovery for which he receives the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physics with Owen Chamberlain. Emigrated to the United States after the Italian racial laws of 1938, he participated in the Manhattan Project and became a professor at Berkeley.
