Born Imre József Pressburger in Miskolc (Hungary) in a Jewish family, Emeric Pressburger studied engineering in Prague and Stuttgart before working in Berlin, from which he was driven out in 1933 during the purge of Jewish employees. A refugee in Paris and then London, he partnered with Michael Powell to form the duo "The Archers" and wrote the screenplays for major films (Colonel Blimp, A Matter of Life and Death, The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus). He was also a novelist.
