Graveur et photographe allemand né à Francfort-sur-le-Main le 18 octobre 1815, mort dans cette même ville le 6 septembre 1875. Formé comme apprenti graveur et lithographe, il quitta Francfort en 1833 pour Hersfeld, Darmstadt et Bonn, où il grava notamment un portrait du pape Pie IX, avant de se tourner vers la photographie naissante et d'ouvrir l'un des premiers studios de Francfort. Sa réputation s'établit avec « Der Dom zu Mainz und Seine Denkmäler », un recueil de trente-six photographies originales cité par Lübke ; il fut aussi l'un des premiers à composer des groupes photographiques artistiques et à utiliser la photographie pour l'étude des sciences naturelles.
