Champion du monde aux échecs ; né le 24 décembre 1868 à Berlinchen, Allemagne ; éducation aux universités de Berlin, Göttingen et Heidelberg, et obtint son doctorat à l'université d'Erlangen. En 1882, il vainquit plusieurs des plus grands maîtres aux échecs dans un tournoi à Berlin, remportant le premier prix sans perdre une seule partie. En 1889, il remporta le premier prix au tournoi des maîtres qui s'est tenu à Breslau, et la même année arriva second au tournoi d'Amsterdam.

En 1892, Lasker se rendit en Angleterre — pays qui a depuis été son domicile — et remporta le championnat des échecs britannique, en battant Blackburne 6 parties à 0. L'année suivante, il se rendit à New York et remporta le championnat d'Amérique, gagnant toutes ses parties contre les treize plus grands joueurs, y compris Steinitz. En 1894, Lasker remporta le championnat du monde à Steinitz à New York avec 10 parties à 5, et au match retour à Moscou, en 1896, son score était : gagné 10 ; perdu 2. Au tournoi international de Hastings en 1895, Lasker remporta le troisième prix, Pillsbury et Tchigorin étant premier et second respectivement. Il remporta le premier prix à Saint-Pétersbourg 1895, Nuremberg 1896, Londres 1899, et Paris 1900, et fit match nul avec Janowski pour le deuxième prix à Cambridge Springs, Pa., 1904.

Lasker a été rédacteur de « The Chess Fortnightly » (Londres) ; et il est l'auteur de « Common Sense in Chess », New York, 1895.

Lasker est aussi un mathématicien de talent, et il a publié les articles suivants : « About a Certain Class of Curved Lines », dans « Nature », 17 oct. 1895 ; « Metrical Relations », _ib._ 8 août 1895 ; « An Essay on the Geometrical Calculus », dans « Proc. of the London Mathematical Society », nov. 1896 et mai 1897 ; « Reiten auf der Convergenzgrenze », dans « Proc. of the Royal Society ».
