Rabbin américain né à Eydtkuhnen, en Allemagne, en 1867, formé au Jews' College de Londres (1880-90) et diplômé de l'université de Londres en 1885. Installé à Toronto en 1890, où il fut d'abord ministre de la synagogue Holy Blossom, il y poursuivit des études universitaires jusqu'en 1893, exerça à Sacramento la même année puis, à partir de 1894, comme rabbin de la congrégation Beth Elohim de Charleston, tout en étudiant la médecine en Caroline du Sud à partir de 1896. Il publia « The Sabbath-School Companion » (1895-96), repris sous le titre « Judaism: an Exposition » (Charleston, 1896).
