Born Rosine Boumendil in Blida into a modest Jewish family, she settled in Paris in 1919 and published under the pseudonym « Elissa Rhaïs » a series of bestselling novels about the Orient (Saâda, 1919; Le Café chantant, 1920; Les Juifs ou la fille d'Eléazar, 1921; La Fille des pachas, 1922, etc.). Her career was built on an Oriental persona fabricated by her publisher.
